What is Video Poker?

Video Poker is a casino card game played on a digital interface that combines elements of traditional poker and slot machines. Instead of competing against other players, you play against the game system.

The objective is to build the strongest possible five-card poker hand. After the initial deal, players choose which cards to keep and which to replace, aiming to improve their hand and receive a payout based on the paytable.

How do you play Video Poker?

The basic steps to play Video Poker are:

  1. Choose your bet amount.

    In this example, I made a bet amount of $1

  2. Click Deal to receive five cards.

    These are the cards that were dealt.

  3. Decide which cards to Hold and which to discard.

    In this deal, i opted to choose and hold both the queens.

  4. Click Deal to replace the discarded cards.

    Upon clicking Deal, the cards (A, 6 and 2) were replaced (10,8,3)

  5. The final hand determines whether you win and how much you are paid.

    Since no other cards that were newly dealt with matches a combination, the highest this hand has to offer is one pair (2 Q).

Winning hands follow standard poker rankings such as pairs, straights, flushes, and full houses.

How do you win at Video Poker?

Winning at video poker is all about building the strongest possible poker hand from the five cards you receive. After the initial deal, you can either keep all five cards or choose to redraw specific cards in hopes of improving your hand.

Unlike traditional poker games, you are not competing against other players. This means you do not need to beat another player’s hand to win. Instead, your final card combination is compared against the game’s paytable.

Depending on the strength of your hand, you can receive payouts for combinations ranging from a pair of jacks or better all the way up to the highest-paying hand, the royal flush.

What are the winning hands in Video Poker?

Typical winning combinations include:

  • Winning combinations are based on standard poker rankings. While exact rules vary by game type, most versions include:

    • Pair of Jacks or Better

    • Two Pair

    • Three of a Kind

    • Straight

    • Flush

    • Full House

    • Four of a Kind

    • Straight Flush

    • Royal Flush

    The Royal Flush is typically the highest-paying hand.
